Tom Alter He was a well-known artist of theater and Hindi cinema. Born on 22 June 1950 in Mussoorie, Dehradun, Tom is known more because of the role of an English officer. Tom was an American by origin but a whole Indian at heart. Tom, who worked in about 300 films in Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati and Bengali, including Hindi, was very fond of mountains. If Padma Shri awardee Tom had not seen Rajesh Khanna acting on screen, he probably would never have appeared in films.

The story of the beginning of Tom Alter’s film journey is no less interesting. Tom, fond of watching Hindi films, got the inspiration to work in films from Rajesh Khanna, the first superstar of Hindi cinema. Rajesh used to be addicted to not only girls but also youths. It is said that Tom once went to see Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore starrer film ‘Aradhana’ with his friend. Rajesh’s acting had such an impact on Tom that he decided to take admission in FTII, Pune.

Tom Alter came to Mumbai to become Rajesh Khanna
Under Roshan Taneja, Tom Alter learned the nuances of acting from 1972 to 1974 at the Film and Television Institute of India. In an interview, Tom had said that I had come to Mumbai to become Rajesh Khanna, not to act on stage. Tom Alter made his film debut in the year 1976 with Ramanand Sagar’s film ‘Charas’. Although Tom got the first offer for the Dev Anand starrer film ‘Sahab Bahadur’ directed by Chetan Anand, but ‘Charas’ is considered to be his first film if it is released first.

Worked with Rajesh Khanna
Tom Alter’s wish to work with Rajesh Khanna was fulfilled by working in the film ‘Naukri’. Tom played Mr. Anderson in the 1978 film directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Tom’s last film, who was a part of many films and plays, was ‘Hamari Paltan’.

Tom Alter had a special affinity for the mountains
