The pair of Shiv-Hari made Amitabh Bachchan sing ‘Rang Barse’, Big B practiced for hours for this

Renowned Santoor player Padma Vibhushan Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, who introduced the world to a new voice of music, died on Tuesday. He was 84 years old. Between 1980 and 1990, Yash Chopra made a hit by giving music in films. Along with the flute player Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia, he gave melodious music in many films like Silsila, Chandni, Dar, Lamhe. The famous pair known as Shiv-Hari has now broken up. Once this pair had told about giving music in films and losing it to Amitabh Bachchan.

Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma had told in an interview to Rediff that ‘Classical musicians were criticized a lot for giving music for Hindi films at that time. Questions were also raised whether classical music can be mixed in commercial? We thought let’s take advantage of this opportunity. We did several sessions with Yashji to understand the situation, location and story. He gave us the screenplay so that we can read and understand the story and theme.

Shiv-Hari’s music is in ‘Silsila’
In an interview to Rediff, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and Hariprasad Chaurasia recalled the days of the film ‘Silsila’ with Amitabh Bachchan for the songs ‘Rang Barse, Neela Aasman So Gaya’ and ‘Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye Hum’. How did the idea come up for reciting poetry? We wanted a hoary to be made to him.

Putting a hand around Amitabh’s neck and lost it
Hariprasad Chaurasia said that ‘is from Allahabad, lost it, as if by putting a hand around the neck. Yash Chopra advised that Amitabh’s father Harivansh Rai Bachchan should write the song. Harivansh Rai was in Bombay at that time, so he was requested. The song was written within an hour, for which the famous song in the rural areas of Uttar Pradesh was made the basis. He didn’t waste time at all because his son was singing.

Big B rehearsed the song a lot
Chaurasia recalls that ‘Big B had spent many hours in the rehearsal of the song. He practiced fiercely and then got it recorded. Recalling ‘Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye Hum’, Shiv Kumar had told that ‘Yash Chopra wanted the poem to be set to music, but he suggested that he could start with poetry, keep the lyrics, between the songs. Can put poetic verses in. We suggested a song and that poetic verse came in the middle of the song. First permanent, then text.. then inter.. then words. This song was composed like this.
