South Cinema (South Cinema) films have also been successful in those areas where Hindi language is spoken a lot. This has raised questions on the dominance of Bollywood in the Indian film industry. With few exceptions, Hindi films have been performing better than films made in regional languages for a long time, but at the end of 2021, the atmosphere had changed.
South cinema films like ‘Pushpa: The Rise’, ‘RRR’, ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ and ‘Vikram’ earned a lot of money at the box office, while Hindi films failed to a large extent. In a recent interview, Karan Johar told why Bollywood is lagging?
According to media reports, ‘Pushpa’ earned Rs 365 crore, while ‘Vikram’ crossed the 300 crore mark at the box office. On the other hand, ‘RRR’ and ‘KGF 2’ earned more than Rs 1000 crores globally. In comparison, only one Hindi film has crossed the Rs 300 crore mark in 2022 and that is ‘The Kashmir Files’ which has earned Rs 340 crore globally.
Karan Johar: ‘Paid PR’ hurt Hindi cinema
Hindi films with big stars like ‘Samrat Prithviraj’, ‘Jersey’ and ‘Runway 34’ failed to cross the Rs 100 crore mark at the box office. Karan Johar said in a conversation with ‘Film Companion’ that Hindi cinema has suffered due to ‘paid PR’ and ‘sheep-walking mentality’.
Karan Johar: There is a lack of trust in Hindi film makers
Karan says, ‘I think we are suffering from everything that we should stay away from. Be it paid PR or something else. I also feel that there is a lack of faith in us. We are suffering from sheep-driven mentality. Karan said that the film makers in the South have faith in their work, which is lacking in today’s Hindi film makers.
Karan is directing ‘Rocky and Rani’s love story’
Said, ‘Tamil cinema and Malayalam cinema have always been full of stories. Along with the economic side of the film, they also pay attention to the beauty. Kannada cinema’s confidence has increased after ‘KGF’. On the work front, Karan is directing ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani’, which stars Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. He is directing the film after almost six years. It also stars Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi, which will release on 10 February 2023.
